Purpose: This study aimed to identify the current status of intravenous (IV) infiltration prevention and management and to assess the need for developing the IV infiltration early detection device (IEDD).
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 290 nurses who are working at medical, surgical and pediatric wards in the 3 general hospitals. The instrument was a structured self-administrative questionnaire including 7 items of general or infiltration-related characteristics, 5 items of current status of IV infiltration prevention/management and 6 items of need for IV IEDD. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics using SPSS win (ver 23.0).
Results: The mean perceived occurrence of infiltration per 10 IV insertion was 1.9. Nurses usually found the infiltration from patients¡¯ complaint (37.7%), and one third of the edema size when the infiltration was found was 0.7-1.0cm. Over 80 percent of nurses perceived the IV IEDD was necessary and had intention to use IEDD. The portable type of IEDD was
preferred.
Conclusion: Most nurses needed IEDD, and necessity was higher among nurses who had worked for 3-4.9 years or working at pediatric wards. We recommend to develop the IEDD in portable type and can measure the infiltration in 10 seconds.
